Homemade Gifts

Still need to make a last minute homemade gift?  One that doesn't include ridiculous amounts of butter and sugar?  No that I am knocking butter and sugar.  Believe me I LOVE butter and sugar.  But if you have someone on your list who has more of a savory tooth these are perfect.

Clementine Salt from 101 Cookbooks

4 tablespoons clementine zest - you could use any citrus fruit you want
2 cups kosher salt - flaky salt would be even better but I didn't have any

Preheat your oven to 225

Pulse the zest and the salt in your food processor just to combine.

Spread the salt on a parchment lined baking sheet and set in the oven to dry for 70 minutes.  Let the salt cool and then pour into whatever containers you like.

Salt will keep in a cool dark place for a couple of months.

Christmas Spice Salt from Nigella Christmas

2 cups kosher salt or sea salt

2 teaspoons red or pink peppercorns
2 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes
4 star anise

Mix salt, peppercorns and pepper flakes together.  If you are going to put all of the salt in one container stir in the star anise too.  I chose to divide the salt up into four containers.  After I filled them with the salt mix I set the star anise on top.

Salt will keep in a cool dark place for a couple of months.

The clementine salt would be delicious on chicken or fish.  The Christmas spice salt would be really great on roast chicken or steak.

Merry Christmas last minute gift makers!
